Picking the Right Fish Name
Okay, so that’s a lot of names you could choose from. It might be overwhelming. But I think I can help with that.
Let’s take a step back, breathe in some oxygen (rise to the surface of the tank if need be) and first know that there’s no right or wrong to choosing a fish name. Your little scaley buddy won’t have hurt feelings if you pick something unexpected.
If you want to take this process seriously, you can, of course, but you don’t have to, either. The important thing about choosing a proper fish name is that you’ll enjoy the name after the fact.
Look at the basic physical traits of your finned pal. Does something stand out? A unique spot or coloration, distinct pattern, or blemish even? Any of these could lead you to the right name.
Perhaps the little orange guppy with black streaks in its tail could be named Streak or Stripes. Maybe the blue betta fish is named Blueboy.
Or is the fish you’re naming displaying goofy or unique characteristics? Maybe he’s super-fast – speedier than the rest – you could choose a comical name like Speedy Gonzalez after the Looney Tunes character, or you could go in the opposite direction with naming him Sloth.
Maybe you have a favorite movie or TV show and the fish has some kind of trait (or not!) that reminds you of a character, a place, or something else that stands out from the show or film.
If you love Jane Eyre, for example, and the little fish tends to hide away, you could always get literary and name the fish after the wife who’s been hidden away, Bertha Mason.
Maybe the fish isn’t shy but outlandishly outgoing. She could be named for the sparky young gal in the musical Hairspray, Tracy Turnblad.
Conclusion
Picking the perfect name for your fish is not an easy task. The last thing you want to do is pick a name and regret it later. If you made it through these lists, then chances are you have already found the perfect name for your fish.
However, if you haven’t don’t despair, go through the list again. Surely something will jump out at you, and you will love the name you pick. Your fish is just as important in your family as any other pet would be.
Pick the right name for your little swimming buddy and enjoy your time together.
